Biography

Norman J. Cooeyate has served in many capacities on behalf of his Zuni people, as well as all American Indians. Through his research experience, Norman has provided a direct link into the cultural aspects and competency that researchers generally overlook when researching in Indigenous populations. With his experience and training in health, as well as his tenure as Governor, Norman has created bridges in addressing these concerns through the use of Indigenous designs, methodology, and participation.

Before becoming Governor of the Zuni Pueblo, Norman managed the National Institute of Digestive, Diabetes, and Kidney Disorders’ Diabetes Prevention Program in his community for 13 years and worked in various roles with the Zuni Tribe. Mr. Cooeyate still maintains strong ties with his community and with the 45 Nations in the Southwest and is a strong advocate for Indigenous issues and concerns.
