About Us

Health Careers Academy is an intense and rewarding non-residential summer program for rising high school juniors and seniors. The program combines experiential learning with academic enhancement opportunities related to health careers. The program is designed to enhance math, science, language arts and critical thinking skills while exposing students to health and science related professions. This program will challenge students by balancing a health career experiential learning with rigorous academic curriculum, test preparation, and service learning.

The HCA Experience

What does HCA offer high school students?

HCA is adapted and designed with community partners at each location, resulting in local programs that provide students with experiential learning and academic opportunities unique to each community.

Participating students will enjoy a rewarding and challenging program that may include:

  • Four-week or Six-week programming
  • Math, Science and Language Arts Instruction
  • Test taking skills course & practice exams
  • CPR/First Response Certification
  • Learn to take vitals
  • Hands-on experience with 17+ health careers
  • Shadow Health Professionals
  • Community based service learning
  • Sessions on cultural humility, college readiness and writing
  • Hear from current students in professional health programs
  • Stipend upon completion of the program

HCA Eligibility

  • Commit to the full four-week or six-week program plus one-day orientation, length of program dependent on location.
  • Secure daily transportation to program location.
  • Comply with UNM program policies regarding conduct, academic honesty and lawful behavior.
  • Be a New Mexico resident with a valid SSN or ITIN, which will only be used for payment purposes.
  • Have an expressed interest in pursuing a health career.
  • Have a 2.5 GPA or higher.
  • Have Parental Permission.
  • Be a current sophomore or junior in high school when you apply to the program.
