Critical care at UNM Health System is a rapidly expanding specialty. UNM Hospital's center includes a 24-bed medical intensive care unit (ICU), an 18-bed trauma surgical ICU, a 6-bed burn center, a 24-bed neurological ICU, a 20-bed pediatric ICU and a 24-bed neonatal ICU.
UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center offers a state-of-the-art ICU that features private patient rooms and bathrooms. Our 12-bed unit is staffed by highly skilled intensive care nurses and is supported by 24/7 on-call coverage from an intensivist (critical care doctor).

Intensive Care Units
UNM Hospital features five ICUs in addition to its 6-bed burn center. A diverse group of physicians monitors the ICUs. Their specialties include anesthesia, surgery, pulmonary, emergency medicine, neurology, pediatric and neonatology.
This 24-bed multidisciplinary unit provides care to a wide range of patients. The expert staff treats and monitors such diseases as:
- Acute coronary syndrome
- ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome)
- Cardiac conditions that required surgery (including valve repairs)
- Diabetic emergencies
- Drug overdoses
- Gastrointestinal bleeds
- Multi-system organ failure
- Renal failure
- Respiratory diseases

This modern, 24-bed unit provides comprehensive and expert care to critically ill patients with a variety of neurological, neurosurgical and neurovascular conditions, which range from seizure disorders and strokes to traumatic brain injuries and aneurysms.
Our staff actively participates in innovative research projects while applying evidence-based best practices to our delivery of care. We use the latest technological modalities for monitoring and guiding therapeutic interventions.

UNM Hospital is the only Level I Trauma Center in New Mexico, and we are proud to serve this state's citizens. The Emergency Department sees over 70,000 patients a year and has 350 beds.

This 20-bed unit is staffed primarily by registered nurses, and is the only pediatric ICU in the state providing Level I trauma care. We are also the only facility that offers extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for adult, pediatric and neonatal patients. Other conditions we treat in our pediatric ICU include burns, sepsis, shock and multi-organ system failure.
There is continuous collaboration among medical, nursing, social work and other disciplines involved in the management and care of our patients. We value our inter- and intradepartmental communication.

Our team works together to care for critically ill and premature infants. The neonatal intensive care unit pulls together specialists from numerous fields and includes physicians, neonatal nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nutritionists, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, lactation specialists, social workers and developmental care specialists.
