HIV Testing & Prevention

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once. UNM Truman Health Services provides rapid point-of-care HIV and hepatitis C testing. It takes less than twenty minutes to get tested and receive your results. We also provide HIV pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis to help stop the transmission of HIV.

Who Should Get Tested

People who engage in certain behaviors should get tested more often. We recommend taking the risk assessment survey from the CDC. If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then you should get an HIV and hepatitis C test as soon as possible.

What Happens if I Test Positive?

Folks who receive a positive rapid HIV test will immediately be connected with a nurse (in person or over the phone). Your nurse will help walk you through next steps and help ensure you get linked to care. We will work hard to make sure your questions are answered, and you feel comfortable.

If you feel you may have been exposed to HIV, it is important you call us right away at 505-272-1312 to schedule an appointment. Our specialty providers can determine if it would be appropriate for you to receive post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to help stop the transmission of HIV.
