Advanced Surgical Skills and Techniques

If noninvasive treatments alone aren’t enough, UNM Health offers the most advanced foot and ankle surgery in New Mexico. Seek treatment from our doctors—the only orthopaedic surgeons fellowship-trained in foot and ankle surgery in the state.

If you need surgery, our minimally invasive techniques use smaller incisions. That means less scarring and faster recovery after these and other common procedures.

Tight shoes, arthritis and genetics can all cause bunions—boney bumps that form on the big toe. Bunions can cause pain, decreased movement and foot deformation.

Most cases won’t require surgery. If needed, surgeons can remove the bunion and realign the toe bone. These surgeries usually do not require overnight stays.

Tendon injuries—from acute to chronic— sometimes require surgery. We specialize in non-operative and operative tendon interventions for the foot and ankle. We combine advanced surgical techniques with state-of-the-art rehabilitation protocols.

Our providers specialize in treating arthritis-related conditions. We offer the newest innovations in total ankle arthroplasty, including revision arthroplasty surgery. In addition, we have significant expertise in fusion surgeries. These are the gold standard treatment options for arthritis of the foot and ankle.

We have the experience and skill set to treat professional athletes, NCAA athletes (including our own Lobos) and athletes of all skill levels and ages. We specialize in advanced practice of treatment of cartilage lesions, ankle sprains, tendon injuries and other acute and over-use injuries. Our specialized rehab protocols get you back on your feet as quickly as possible.
