Patient Financial Assistance

Patients who want to get care at UNM Health should not have to miss treatment and continued care of their health because they cannot pay. We have programs and services available to help patients find the resources they need to afford good care.

Financial services representatives help patients apply for Centennial Care 2.0, New Mexico’s Medicaid program, and/or get affordable coverage through the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange (HIX).

Bernalillo County residents who meet certain income guidelines may qualify for medical assistance through UNM Care. UNM Care covers expenses for the underinsured and provides secondary insurance for those patients with Medicare and/or commercial insurance coverage who have outstanding balances at UNMH.
When you receive care, you’ll make a copayment for clinic visits, prescriptions, specific procedures, surgeries and admission. Copays are based on your gross monthly income.
In order to apply, call 505-272-2521 to make an appointment.

Items to Bring to your Appointment:

Expect regular access to quality care at a UNM Health facility or one of our community partners, including:

You may qualify for medical assistance through SRMC Care, a UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center program, if you live in Sandoval County and meet certain income guidelines.
If you apply for SRMC Care, you must also apply for Medicaid or the health insurance exchange, if eligible. You may get SRMC Care until you receive Medicaid eligibility or coverage through the insurance exchange.
Call 505-994-7157 to make an appointment with a patient financial services representative who can help determine if you qualify for SRMC Care.

To help us determine your eligibility for assistance please fill out an application in English [PDF] or Spanish [PDF] (includes plain-language policy) and bring the completed form to your appointment.

Patients who do not qualify for insurance or financial assistance may qualify for the self-pay discount program. This program can reduce hospital and physician charges by 45% for residents of Bernalillo County who meet the program guidelines. Residents of other New Mexico counties may also qualify, depending on the medical services needed.
After applying for the self-pay discount program, you will be asked to make a down payment based on what was approved by Patient Financial Assistance.

In order to qualify, call 505-272-2521 to meet with our staff to discuss the self-pay discount. Please be prepared to bring the following documentation to your appointment:

  • Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, rental agreement or mortgage statement in your name.
  • Proof of income, such as a check stub or income tax returns.
  • Most recent bank statement, if you have a bank account.

When you receive medical services at any of the UNM Health facilities, you’ll get two bills: one from UNM Hospitals and one from UNM Medical Group, Inc. (the physicians). Call 505-272-2521 to arrange payment for the hospital bill. To make a payment plan for UNM Medical Group charges, call the number on your bill.

If you get care at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, expect to receive a third bill with a number you can call to make payment arrangements.

Patient Financial Services can also help patients set up affordable payment plans to cover out-of-pocket health care expenses (payment plans are when you agree to pay the amount you owe over time instead of paying the full amount all at once).
