Our faculty are dedicated to teaching our residents and providing top notch health care to New Mexicans.
Role: Medical Director, Main Operating Room
I am a native New Mexican and graduate of UNM SOM. I feel very lucky to be able to serve the community that I am from and am passionate about delivering high quality, evidence based care. I love the OR and cannot think of a more exciting and vibrant place to work. As the Medical Director of the Main Operating Room, I spend many days working closely with our nursing, surgical and administrative counterparts, attempting to facilitate efficiency and safety in the operating rooms. This has given me the opportunity to explore beyond the typical scope of an Anesthesiologists clinical case load. I would say that my favorite teaching days are spent as Attending for the Acute Pain Service. Regional Anesthesia is an area with so much growth and requires continuous acquisition of knowledge. I enjoy the challenges of this environment and always attempt to pass on my enthusiasm to learners.
Role: Director of the Acute Pain Service, Program Director of the Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship, Director of Social Media
I am the eldest child in my family and from an early age I really loved helping my siblings with homework. This interest developed over time from coaching high school sports to MCAT prep teaching to eventually teaching here at UNM. I enjoy teaching because it’s amazing to see progress as learners grow in the depth of their knowledge. Teaching allows me to see what areas I myself have gaps of knowledge in and encourages me to keep learning so that I can better educate others.
I chose academic medicine because of my interest in teaching but also, I love New Mexico and feel so much gratitude towards UNM SOM. I am a New Mexico native and graduated from UNM SOM but had the opportunity to do my residency training elsewhere. I came back to UNM to bring my outside experience and to encourage other medical students and residents to pursue training and careers here because my experience has been so positive and impactful.
I am continually inspired by both my patients and my colleagues. When I begin discussing a patient’s history, I admire the strength many bring on the day of surgery, despite the medical or social struggles they have faced. In addition, I am so fortunate to work amongst incredibly kind, thoughtful, and competent colleagues, it really inspires me to try to be the best clinician and colleague I can in return.
I completed a fellowship in regional anesthesia at UNM but I did residency training at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. I have a profound interest in regional anesthesia and am currently the director of our Acute Pain Service as well as assistant director of our Regional Anesthesia Fellowship. In addition, I believe my residency training experience outside of NM allows me to bring different approaches to other clinical situations as anesthesia practice varies widely across geographic locations and institutions.
Role: Assistant Professor, Assistant Residency Program Director, Assistant Residency Simulation Director
Ever since medical school, teaching has been my favorite aspect of medicine. I love working with learners of all disciplines; from taking an entire course as an MS4 to teaching residents and students during my two fellowships. Teaching has remained a high priority for me and is the reason I left my home state of Maine to move to New Mexico.
I find working as an anesthesiologist at times stressful and even daunting, but in the end being tasked with (and thankfully usually succeeding in) taking care of patients at both the worst and best hours of life is a really special feeling.
I have specialty training in cardiac anesthesia. I love performing and teaching TEE to medical students and residents.
