My journey into Family Medicine was shaped by my experience navigating the healthcare system as a transgender woman. Moving from patient to physician, I recognized that the most substantive healing occurs within long-term, trust-based relationships. I chose Family Medicine for its broad spectrum of practice and the opportunity to address systemic barriers to care within my communities.
During my training, I have found purpose in serving as a care conduit for marginalized patients, which has included volunteering to guide families through insurance enrollment and helping community members navigate and advocate for their unique needs. This commitment to advocacy aligns with my clinical interests in gender-affirming care and palliative care.
I chose to train at the University of New Mexico because of its fundamental commitment to social justice and its reputation for connectiing with diverse, often underserved populations. UNM’s emphasis on community-based, team-oriented care perfectly aligns with my goal of becoming a physician-advocate. I am eager to join a residency family that values lived experience as the foundation for superior patient care.
