Elena Florez-Aguirre, MD

 I chose Family Medicine because of its unique ability to build meaningful, longitudinal relationships while caring for patients across all stages of life. Since the beginning of medical school, I have been drawn to the trust that develops when physicians care for patients not just in moments of illness, but through life’s transitions. I have a passion for full-spectrum care where I can address a wide range of needs, from preventive care to chronic disease management, while truly knowing my patients.

I am especially interested in lifestyle medicine and caring for underserved and rural communities. My work teaching culturally inclusive nutrition and lifestyle classes deepened my understanding of how community engagement and patient-centered care can empower individuals to improve their health. Family Medicine’s team-based approach and emphasis on whole-person care align with my values.

I chose UNM/Santa Fe because of its commitment to serving diverse and underserved populations, its strong community focus, and its training in full-spectrum medicine. As someone from New Mexico, I am dedicated to giving back to my community and practicing in a setting where I can make a lasting impact.
