Aurora Maes, MD is a family medicine resident physician at the University of New Mexico. She is a "locally grown" New Mexican who has done all her training in Albuquerque and was raised in the Four Corners in Farmington, NM. Her great mentors like Dr. Holly Abernethy and Dr. Joseph Pope inspired her to go into medicine. Dr. Maes was torn between Family Medicine and surgical specialties like ENT in medical school.
After doing 3.5 years of training in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery she is now doing family medicine because of her love of patient advocacy and clinic based procedures! She has experienced some training on the east coast but says "nothing beats taking care of my fellow New Mexicans, they are the hardiest and kindest people I know!" She chose UNM Albuquerque because of our diverse patient population, the wealth of opportunities that exist at UNM to expand into academic practice, and because UNM is a second home!
When she graduates, she hopes to return to her hometown doing full-spectrum family medicine practice with a special focus on improving ear, nose, and throat diseases and outcomes at the primary care level. She is excited to care for you!
