Irene Valencia, MD

 I chose Family Medicine because of the diverse training, which will allow me to adapt to the needs of my community. Growing up in New Mexico, I saw how deeply health is shaped by family, community, and access, and I feel incredibly grateful to train and give back here at UNM. The program’s commitment to serving diverse and underserved communities, along with its strong training in full-spectrum care, made it a clear place for me to continue my journey.

I have developed a strong interest in maternal and child health, preventive care, and reproductive health, including access to contraception, abortion care, and procedures such as vasectomies. I am especially drawn to the opportunity to care for patients through pregnancy, be present at delivery, and continue caring for both parent and child over time. That continuity builds trust in a way that is both humbling and deeply motivating.

Overall, I am excited to be in Family Medicine because it values the whole person, their story, and the systems that shape their health. I also find deep meaning in teaching and mentorship, and I am excited to continue growing and learning as a clinician, educator, and advocate within this community.
