Announcing the Office for Continuous Professional Learning

Learning is at the center of our work at the UNM School of Medicine (SOM), whether we are providers, educators, researchers, or some combination of all three. In that vein, we are excited to announce the creation of a new unit within the SOM Office of Education.

The Office for Continuous Professional Learning (OCPL) will launch on July 1, 2019, to support the learning and development of teaching skills for all SOM clinical and basic-science faculty; residents, PhD students, and post-doctoral educators; all HSC professional staff engaged in interprofessional collaboration; and healthcare providers across New Mexico.

The new OCPL will encompass the current functions of the Office for Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development (CME&CPD), led by William Rayburn, MD, and the Office for Medical Educator Development (OMED), led by Gary Smith, Ph.D. The office will support lifelong professional learning and growth beyond the limited scope of formal education events that disseminate best practices. Alongside partners at all institutional levels, OCPL staff will work to assure improved performance of providers and educators, to improve the outcomes of patients and learners.

Current collaborators and stakeholders with OMED, CME&CPD, or both, will receive additional information in the near future about ongoing engagement with OCPL, and how it will enhance the learning needs of organizations and individuals.

Gary Smith will assume the senior leadership position in the OCPL on July 1. If you have questions or ideas, please pass them along to gsmith@salud.unm.edu.
