NM Poison Prevention Month (NMPPM) 2019

Your 21st Century Poison Center! Your 21st Century Poison Center!

Albuquerque, NM - "I am a school nurse in Tularosa NM and recently have had the need to use the NM Poison Control on two separate occasions. I was so glad they were there!!! The responsibility of a child's health when that child is not yours is sometimes a heavy burden. On both occasions the people I talked with were very friendly and knowledgeable. They knew how to verbally calm a situation and make it easier to handle. They followed up and gave reassurance and worked well as a fellow team member. I cannot express how much having such a wonderful resource is to all school nurses" ~ Julia Howells RN.

This year, the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center plans to bring special attention to the expansive scope of our services by highlighting how we can be of service to specific groups and populations regarding current poisoning trends and issues. As noted in the above testimonial, we currently field calls concerning all types of poisonings across all generations, professions and situations. Our weekly breakdown is as follows:

  • March 4th - 8th: Caregivers: School Nurses and Grandfamilies
  • March 11th - 15th: Substance Misuse, Abuse and Overdose: Unintentional and Intentional
  • March 18th - 22nd: Teens: Social Media Challenges, E-cigarettes and Babysitting
  • March 25th - 29th: Pets and Poisonings

Last fiscal year the NMPDIC received a total of 23,298 calls. Our expertly trained specialists were able to safely manage 82% of the 21,254 poisoning exposures at home or on site, which resulted in $12.4 million in healthcare cost savings for New Mexicans. The involvement of our Medical Toxicologists with hospitalized patients saved an additional $37.8 million in healthcare costs.

Please get involved and help the NMPDIC make a difference! Know that no act is too big or too small when it comes to preventing poison-related morbidity and mortality. Visit us for ideas and resources on how to become involved:
