OMI Identifies Three Remaining Victims from Thoreau Crash

UPDATE, Tuesday, Sept. 4, 3:30 p.m.

The Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) has identified the three remaining decedents from the Greyhound bus crash near Thoreau, N.M. At this time, we have notified the next-of-kin for two of these three victims. The third victim was likely homeless, which has made locating family members difficult. We will not be releasing this victim's name as we continue to search for his family.

The two names we can release are:

· Emmett Stoker, 66

· Raymon Michael Albrecht, 27

"I know this has been a difficult few days for these families and being able to identify their loved ones is only the beginning of the closure process for them," said Dr. Kurt Nolte, Chief Medical Investigator. "As we continue to search for relatives of this final victim, I want to thank the OMI team that has been working around the clock to investigate these deaths to serve the living."

The Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) has identified five of the eight decedents from the bus accident in Thoreau, NM through fingerprints:

Sadie Thomas, 50

Charla Bahe, 34

Terry Mason, 45

Luis Alvarez, 50

Veronica Jean Williams, 49

"My heart goes out to the families of these victims. We are always diligent to try and identify decedents quickly so we can release them back to their families," said Dr. Kurt Nolte, Chief Medical Investigator. "We know there are other families who are still waiting for word of their loved ones and we are using several identification methods to make those identifications."

OMI has determined all eight individuals died from accidental blunt force trauma. Any questions regarding the investigation into the crash should be directed to the New Mexico State Police.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) has received eight remains from the Greyhound bus crash near Thoreau, N.M.

The accident occurred Thursday afternoon and eight victims were transported to OMI. The accident scene was assessed and the bodies were recovered by OMI field investigators. Forensic pathologists and other forensic scientists are evaluating these bodies to establish the cause of death and identity of each victim over the next few days.

Our sympathies are with the families whose loved ones were involved in this crash. Our commitment to investigate deaths to serve the living will drive our efforts to bring some closure and peace to these families, as well as to support public safety efforts.

This is an active investigation and we cannot release more information at this time. New Mexico State Police, the National Transportation Safety Board and other agencies are investigating the circumstances of the accident. Any questions regarding the accident investigation should be directed to the state police.
