Tinkle Named President of International Society of Nurses in Genetics

Mindy Tinkle, PhD, RN, an associate professor in the University of New Mexico College of Nursing, has been elected president of the International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG).

Tinkle, who was elected to the post in November, has served on the organization's board as the treasurer. ISONG is an international community of nurses and others who promote public health and well-being through the discovery, interpretation, application and management of genomic information. The organization also works to develop and promote nurse leaders in genetics and genomics in relation to education, research, practice and health policy.

"I am truly honored and excited to assume this leadership role on behalf of ISONG," Tinkle said. "I hope to make a contribution to the many exciting initiatives that this vibrant organization has underway and work with our membership and other partners to plan for the future where genetics will most certainly touch all of our lives."

Tinkle teaches genetics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She brings experience in genetics education and research from her role at the National Institutes of Health, where she served as project director of the National Institute of Nursing's Summer Genetics Institute for six years.

She was a member of the consensus panel that developed "Essentials of Genetic and Genomic Nursing: Competencies and Curricular Guidelines," a seminal document endorsed by the American Nurses Association and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
