Dentistry

The Department of Dental Medicine was formed within the UNM School of Medicine in 1999. Our mission is to provide education and clinical programs to train dental health professionals in dental education, clinical services, community health and research to improve oral health throughout New Mexico.

We have always emphasized primary care because poor oral health has been linked to a number of health woes, including heart disease and diabetes. However, too many New Mexicans continue to fail to receive routine preventative dental care. UNM and community health providers continue to team up to address this problem by incorporating oral health into a team-based care setting.
