Biography
Dr. Aguirre earned her M.S. degree in Cell & Developmental Biology from Rutgers The State University of New Jersey in 2000. She earned her Medical Doctor degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2005. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in 2008. She completed a fellowship in Adult Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of New Mexico in 2010. Following her clinical fellowship she completed a 6 year clinical research post-doctorate degree at the New Mexico Biomedical Research Institute (BRINM). She has been the New Mexico VA Endocrinology Section Chief since 2017.
Personal Statement
I completed a post-doctorate research fellowship at the Biomedical Research Institute of New Mexico doing clinical interventional trials a the New Mexico VA Health Care System. I have a passion for research and for advancing the endocrine care of Veterans and the teams serving them. My research expertise include: Male hypogonadism, aromatase polymorphism, obesity, diabetes and sarcopenia. I have continued to pursue this interest working with our Endocrine team, providers and patients at the New Mexico VA. I am an active scientific member of the New Mexico VA IRB and serve as back up for the IRB Chair.
As an endocrinology section chief a the New Mexico VA I have also developed additional clinical, training and policy expertise in diabetes technologies. I am the VA regional VISN 22 Desert Pacific Healthcare Network Diabetes Technology lead Physician. I am the New Mexico VA representative of the VA regional VISHN 22 Desert Pacific Health Care Network endocrinology community practice (Regional Endocrinology Chiefs). I also serve as the lead physician of the New Mexico VA Health care system diabetes-Subcommittee of of the Pharmaceutical and Therapeutic Committee (P&T) and lead physician of the New Mexico VA Health Care System ADA accredited patient diabetes education programs. My main goal is to continue to contribute to the scientific advancement of endocrine knowledge. Additionally, I have a passion for finding ways to help support Veterans living with endocrine disorders and the teams supporting them.
