Personal Statement
As the unit director, I am committed to providing safe, quality care to our patients. This new job assignment has provided me with the opportunity to work with all providers involved in caring for the critically ill, not just the physicians. I collaborate with nursing, pharmacy, and respiratory therapy leadership so we can all work together to help our patients heal faster. I am involved in different quality improvement projects and working on updating several protocols. I want our ICU to be the place where all members of the team (physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists, housekeeping staff, and more) feel proud of their work and are excited to be part of the unit.
Areas of Specialty
I am very passionate about providing the best possible patient care while training excellent future generations of physicians. Being the director of the Medical ICU and the Critical Care Medicine fellowship program provides me the opportunity to pursue both of my passions.
Education
As a teacher, I hope to be a role model that not only provides students with knowledge but also instills curiosity in them so they can be life-long learners. Since my appointment as faculty at the University of New Mexico, I have been involved with educating medical students, residents, fellows, and nurse practitioners. I started off as the Rotation Director for the house staff in the Medical ICU, then worked as the Associate Program Director for the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program and Internal Medicine Residency Program. Now I serve as the Director for the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program. Being in these roles has provided me with opportunities to teach different levels of learners in varied learning environments. From a very formal setting like a presentation in Grand Rounds to doing a very informal discussion on septic shock over lunch in the ICU or running a hands-on session on Ultrasound/procedure training, I enjoy all forms of teaching. I have taught others, but I have learned a lot from every one of my learners as well. I intend on continuing this mutual relationship with my learners forever.
