Biography

Dr. Melody Avila, DNP, RN, FNP-C, is a Clinician Educator, Assistant Professor for the University of New Mexico, College of Nursing. She serves as a Family Nurse Practitioner for the UNM ADOBE program, focusing on adolescent health and mental well-being. As a native New Mexican, Dr. Avila is deeply committed to delivering high-quality care to underserved and rural communities. She spent several years in Northern New Mexico at El Centro Family Health, working as a Family Nurse Practitioner across two school-based health centers and a family practice clinic. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for the New Mexico Alliance for School-Based Health Care. Within her role at ADOBE, she has served as the Principal Investigator for a project called "ADOBE Portal" and is a contributor to the Accelerating Child Health Transformation (ACHT) initiative, supported by the Center for Health Care Strategies and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

In her dual capacity as an educator and clinician, Dr. Avila aims to offer holistic and inclusive care, focusing on preventative medicine, mental well-being, gender-diverse care, substance use disorder treatment, and an evidence-informed approach to managing chronic conditions.

Dr. Avila earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of New Mexico. Her doctoral project centered on preventing risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus in an at-risk adolescent population.
