Biography

Dr. June Bryan de la Pe¤a originates from the Philippines, where his journey in the healthcare field commenced with a degree in Nursing from Western Leyte College of Ormoc City. Fueled by a passion for research, he pursued advanced studies at Sahmyook University in Seoul, South Korea, culminating in the attainment of both his Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmacology, with a specialization in Neuropharmacology. Dr. de la Pe¤a furthered his scientific journey through postdoctoral training at the Center for Advanced Pain Studies at the University of Texas - Dallas and the Department of Anesthesiology at the School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin - Madison. His research is primarily centered on neuropharmacology and molecular biology, with a particular focus on functional genomics and RNA control. His work delves into critical areas encompassing chronic pain, addiction, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and the exploration of natural products. Dr. de la Pe¤a's illustrious research portfolio includes 50+ peer-reviewed papers in esteemed scientific journals, invited talks at various international conferences, and several grants and awards in recognition of his impactful contributions.

Personal Statement

Chronic pain is a pervasive and devastating condition that places a substantial burden on our healthcare system while inflicting immense human suffering. Pain-sensing neurons, known as nociceptors, play a pivotal role in detecting and transmitting pain signals from the periphery to the central nervous system. Maladaptive plasticity in nociceptors has been associated with neuropathic pain, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain shrouded in mystery. My research mission is to unveil and disrupt the networks of gene regulation responsible for chronic pain and to pioneer innovative pain therapeutics. Leveraging my interdisciplinary expertise, I will employ a multifaceted approach that integrates functional genomics, genetics, and neuropharmacology to unravel the intricate molecular pathways driving chronic pain conditions. The overarching impact of my research program is to enhance the quality of life for countless individuals grappling with chronic pain, offering them hope and relief from their burdensome affliction.
