Biography
Dr. Bustillo joined the Department of Psychiatry at UNM in 1996, after completing a 3-year Schizophrenia Research Fellowship at the University of Maryland. He is a clinician scientist devoted to caring for patients with serious mental illness. In 2008 he received the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. He has also received several National Institutes of Health (NIH) and foundation extramural awards to study the interface between brain chemistry and pharmacology of schizophrenia. He has over 150 peer-reviewed publications. His contribution to the field of schizophrenia psychopathology was acknowledged by his appointment to the American Psychiatric Associationâs DSM-5 Work-group on Psychotic Disorders from 2007 through 2012. He is a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and in 2014 was Chair of the NIH Interventions Committee for Adult Disorders study section. In 2018, he was awarded the American Psychiatric Association Simon Bolivar Award for outstanding contributions to education, research and overall achievement in psychiatry. In his 28 years at UNM he has provided continuous care to some of the sickest patients in Albuquerque.
