Biography
Dr. Cain was born and raised in rural New Mexico. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of New Mexico in 2002 and later completed her Master of Public Health in 2008. Dr. Cain completed a General Psychiatry Residency in 2014 and two fellowships in Consult Liaison Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Personal Statement
Dr. Kimothi Cain, MD, MPH, deeply understands the hardships faced by people living in remote areas of New Mexico. Dr. Cain grew up on a cattle ranch in rural New Mexico and experienced firsthand the challenges of accessing healthcare in an isolated community. Dr. Cain's personal experiences inspired her to pursue a career in medicine and psychiatry. She is now triple-boarded in General Psychiatry, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and Consult Liaison Psychiatry. Dr. Cain is committed to caring for New Mexico's most vulnerable young children and their families. She is a strong advocate for children living in rural areas and in at-risk communities to improve resilience and reduce intergenerational child abuse and trauma. As the UNM Fellowship Director for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, she is also an enthusiastic educator who shares her knowledge and expertise to train child psychiatry fellows to improve the lives of children and their families.
