Biography
Dr. Cardon received a B.M. degree in cello performance (1992) at University of Utah and an M.M. in cello performance (1993) at Northern Illinois University and played professionally for a number of years prior to returning to complete pre-med coursework at University of Utah. She subsequently worked as a research tech at Arcaris, Inc. in Salt Lake City, University of Washington in Seattle, and Epigenomics, Inc. in Seattle, where she did cancer research and shares authorship of several publications and patents. She then completed her M.D. degree (2009), followed by Internal Medicine residency at University of New Mexico (2012) and served as Primary Care Chief Resident (2012). Since that time, she has worked at New Mexico Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She completed a pain certification and is board certified in Addiction Medicine through ABPM. For 7 years, she ran the Co-occurring Disorders Clinic at the VA, where she cared for complex patients with both chronic pain and substance use disorders. During her tenure, several thousand patients were successfully transitioned off chronic opioid therapy and numerous IM residents, medical students, psychiatry residents, and addiction psychiatry fellows benefitted from training in the clinic. She is now a hospitalist at the VA, and teaching interests continue to include addiction medicine and pain management.
