Biography
Elizabeth Cretara, MD is Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico since 2021 where she specializes in the care of patients with glaucoma and cataracts. She earned her undergraduate degree from Middlebury College and was a Fulbright Community Service Fellow in the Russian Federation. She earned her medical degree at State University of New York Upstate Medical School in Syracuse, New York and completed ophthalmology residency at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She completed her glaucoma fellowship at Casey Eye Institute and Devers Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Cretara has received multiple research grants from the American Glaucoma Society, including funding to study the density of perfused ocular blood vessels during perimenopause. As a selected member of the University of New Mexico Medical Education Scholars Program 2023-2024, Dr. Cretara developed a course which she continues to co-direct, Practical Research Skills for Medical Students. She is the New Mexico State Councilor to American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the University of New Mexico Clinician Advisory Group.
Personal Statement
I am grateful for the opportunity to work with a wonderful team at the eye clinic at University of New Mexico where I enjoy partnering with patients in the treatment of their glaucoma and cataracts. I find ample opportunities to stay busy with academic work including research and teaching. I particularly enjoy teaching surgical skills to our residents and fellows and working with medical students on research projects. My current research focuses on how menopause influences glaucoma risk. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, doing triathlons, and playing in the beautiful New Mexican mountains.
