Biography

James P. Dossett, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in vitreoretinal surgery. He grew up in Weymouth, MA. A first-generation college student, he attended Tufts University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biopsychology. He then obtained his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, graduating as the recipient of the Dublin Prize in Ophthalmology, awarded for academic excellence in ophthalmology. Dr. Dossett then completed a Transitional Year Internship at Carney Hospital in Boston, where he was recipient of the Best Intern award. He then went on to ophthalmology residency at Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, NY where he served as a co-chief resident. After residency, he then furthered his training with a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at West Virginia University Eye Institute in Morgantown, WV. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, Vit-Buckle Society, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He is passionate about research with a particular interest in vitreoretinal surgical outcomes, disparities in healthcare, and ophthalmic education. He has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles in publications such as the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, the Journal of Vitreoretinal Diseases, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Retina Times, and Retina Today. In his spare time, Dr. Dossett enjoys weightlifting, soccer, running, music of all genres, cinema, reading, and playing guitar.

Personal Statement

I am deeply committed to providing high quality, vitreoretinal surgical care to the population of New Mexico, particularly patients of limited means, while dedicating myself to the education and mentorship of the next generation of ophthalmologists through the training of medical students and residents.
