Biography
Dr. Reza Ehsanian is the Vice Chair of Research and Assistant Professor in the Division of Pain Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at University of New Mexico. He serves as the Medical Director of the UNM Pain Consultation and Treatment Center where his clinical practice encompasses interventional pain medicine and the care of patients with spinal cord injury. His academic interests include the translation of basic science to clinical practice to ultimately improve patient outcomes. After completing his undergraduate degree at San Jose State University, Dr. Ehsanian worked as a Staff Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. Dr. Ehsanian completed his Howard Hughes Medical Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health where he developed his research interest in translational medicine. He completed his MD training at Stanford School of Medicine and his Ph.D. training at Oxford University, Christ Church College. He went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford, as well as a Clinic Research Fellowship at Vanderbilt University, after which he completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a fellowship in Pain Medicine at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Ehsanian is involved in numerous clinical studies at UNM and has published extensively in the field of interventional pain medicine and physiatry (Citations 1145; h-index 18; i10-index 25).
Personal Statement
My aspiration is to exponentially advance the department's research mission by leading a coordinated campaign that holistically addresses the obstacles meaningfully affecting the speed, probability, and sustainability of innovative treatments. The major focus of my research and clinical efforts are in the advancement of treatments for individuals with chronic pain conditions as well as individuals with spinal cord injury.
