Biography
Gerstein received a B.A. degree in Zoology (1993) from University of Vermont. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree (2000) from University of Vermont College of Medicine. Following his MD degree he completed a 3-year anesthesiology residency at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
Personal Statement
My research interests are centered on cardiovascular anesthesia as well as airway related topics. I have a particular interest in perioperative acute kidney injury as well as the perioperative application of echocardiography. I mentor junior faculty, residents, medical students, and undergraduate students to facilitate their own clinical research interests.
My teaching interests are focused upon clinical anesthesia for medical students and residents in the areas of airway management, trauma, cardiothoracic, and vascular anesthesia. I have a special interest in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography specific in the setting of major cardiac, vascular, and trauma procedures.
My service interests are in the participation in committees and groups to improve the education of residents and medical students, as well as, further the mission of the UNM Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.
