Personal Statement

I have had an fascinating career at the UNMSOM and have been provided with many opportunities to learn and contribute to our diverse NM communities. My earliest interest in community-based medical services comes out of my experiences in medical school and the outreach clinics in South Texas; Crystal City the birthplace of the Raza Unidad Party in the tumult of the 1970's. Followed by a journey to NM for what was then outreach to Native American communities through IHS. I finished my psychiatry residency at UNM and did my National Health Service payback in our Southwest Valley having been instrumental in the designation of a psychiatrically underserved community.

My interests broadly have been in community-centered psychiatric medical care and the assistance in the development of programs for the recruitment, admission and training of underrepresented populations to careers in medicine in my years in administration within the school of medicine.

I now practice primary care psychiatry in my academic home, the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Areas of Specialty

My area of interest is patient care in a primary care setting. I am especially interested in the care of my elder patients at the University Hospital/ Senior Health Center. I also have a general psychiatric practice at the Family Medicine Center.
