Personal Statement

My clinical and academic interests are in the areas of obesity and lipidology. I am a certified American Board of Obesity Medicine diplomat and serve as a spokesperson for The Obesity Society. My prior research experience has involved elucidating the role of fatty acids in peripheral insulin resistance using insulin clamp techniques and stable isotope tracers. Clinically, I have a strong interest in obesity management and lipodystrophies, a heterogenous group of rare disorders involving fat metabolism. It is my goal to develop clinical research studies at UNM combining these interests so as to further our understanding of the processes underlying obesity and disorders of insulin resistance. In conjunction with these research endeavors, I have developed a multidisciplinary Weight Management clinic at UNM so as to provide our community with the services and care necessary for long-term weight management. This clinic also serves as a prime educational opportunity for trainees interested in furthering their knowledge and clinical skills in the area of obesity.
