Biography

Dr. Hartley received a B.S. degree in Biology (1986) from the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. in Biological Structure (1992) from the University of Washington. She went on to complete Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the University of Rennes I, France. Her first faculty position was in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. She came home to the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 2002.

Personal Statement

The goal of my basic science research was to define the roles of RNA binding proteins and microRNAs in regulation of the breast cancer cell cycle, and inflammation in breast cancer. My background in developmental, cell and molecular biology and training in anatomy, provided a strong foundation for my research and for my current administrative and teaching responsibilities. As Assistant Dean of Foundational Medical Sciences, I oversee the basic science courses in the undergraduate medical curriculum. I also serve as Block Chair of Clinical Morphology and Molecular Foundations of Medicine. My role as Executive Director of Program Evaluation, Education and Research allows me to collaboratively and critically evaluate the medical curriculum for continuous quality improvement. These roles led to my current education research focus on evaluation of anatomy specific learning and teaching.

Areas of Specialty

Post-transcriptional regulation of the cell cycle
