Biography

Christopher Helstern, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Radiology and the University of New Mexico's Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). He earned his PhD and MSc in Physics from the University of Tennessee: Knoxville. He is a board-certified health physicist (CHP). From 2016-2024, Dr. Helstern served as the RSO for Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center managing the radiation protection programs that included an academic medical center, a university, a pediatric hospital, three regional hospitals, and over 180 clinics across middle Tennessee.

Nationally, Dr. Helstern is an Associate Editor for Health Physics and current American Board of Health Physics Part II Panel Chair. He is also a Nuclear Medicine, Medical, and Dental Patient Issues content expert for the Health Physics Society's Ask the Experts Program.
