Biography
Dr. Leng holds a medical degree from Shandong Medical University, Jinan, China (1999). He holds a doctorate from the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (renamed as Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2002), Beijing, China (2004) and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Albuquerque, USA (Dr. Steven Belinsky’s Lab) in 2008.
Personal Statement
I am a molecular epidemiologist with extensive expertise in applying “systems epidemiology” approach in the understanding of etiology and mechanisms for human diseases. On several government funded grants, I have played an integral role in the conceptualization, design, implementation, and interpretation of the molecular and genetic epidemiological studies conducted in former uranium miners, smokers, workers exposed to diesel exhaust and carbon black aerosol, and lung cancer patients. I am confident in my ability to work with multiple collaborators with different scientific backgrounds and to handle multiple data types generated from large-scale longitudinal cohorts. My training in medicine, toxicology, and molecular biology also has strengthened my capacity to bring the research from bedside to benchside to further investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the associations observed at the population level. I have built an excellent track record of publications in the field of cancer research, occupational and environmental medicine, and ethnic disparity of health. Currently, I am developing programmatic researches with specific focus on understanding of ethnic disparity of cancers and metal carcinogenesis in minority populations in New Mexico with unique genetic background and environmental/occupational exposures.
