Biography

Masten received a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering (1980) from the University of Cincinnati, and a B.S. degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (1988) from Weber State University. She earned her Doctorate degree (1993) from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Following her PhD, she completed a year-long Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Department of Microbiology at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, a four-year Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Department of Pathology at the University of New Mexico, and subsequently completed a Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory Director Fellowship at the University of New Mexico and TriCore Reference Laboratories.

Personal Statement

My teaching interests range from teaching undergraduate to graduate students, medical students to post-sophomore fellows, and residents, as well as Molecular Pathology and HLA Director Training fellows. A major focus of my teaching is active learning methodologies and active learning techniques applied to immunology, molecular diagnostics, transplantation, and clinical management.

My academic service at the university is as Director for the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program.

My clinical service is as an American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) accredited HLA Laboratory Director at TriCore Reference Laboratories in support of solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, disease susceptibility testing, pharmacogenomic testing, and histocompatibility testing for other clinical purposes.

At the national level, I am an ASHI Accreditation Review Board (ARB) Commissioner and Laboratory Inspector, along with a Laboratory Inspector for the College of American Pathologists (CAP). I have served as a mentor to new ASHI Lab Directors and an on the ASHI Director Training Review Committee.

My current research interests are anti-histocompatibility (HLA) antibodies; HA-related pharmacogenomics; and HLA polymorphism. My research interests align with my primary clinical and teaching interests in the areas of immunology and immunogenetics, especially the role of HLA in the immune response in transplantation, and the role HLA plays in disease.
