Biography

Dr. North received a BA in Philosophy from the University of Washington in 1970, MD from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974, and completed a Family Medicine residency and MS in Family Medicine and Community Health from the University of Minnesota in 1977. He was a Commisioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service assigned to the Indian Health Service from 1977-2008. He retired at the rank of Captain. He was the national IHS Chief Medical Officer when he retired.

Personal Statement

Dr. North has held many leadership positions in the Indian Health Service and UNM HSC. He currently serves on the Board of Directors and Legislative Affairs Committee of the New Mexico Academy of Family Physicians. He is interested in the healthcare of American Indian and Alaska Natives, health equity and social justice, and improving funding for primary care and prevnetion.

Dr. North received numerous awards from the Indian Health Service and United States Department of Health and Human Services He established the first 100% smoke free hospital policy in the USA He established the first residency track in a federal IHS facility HE was president of the La Tierra Sagrada Society and established a family endowed scholarship for medical students
