Biography
Dr. Orosco was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and graduated in Electrical Engineering with High Honors from New Mexico State University. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Johns Hopkins University and then residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (Ear, Nose and Throat) at the University of California San Diego. He completed a fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction at Stanford. He came to UNM after working as an Assistant Professor at UC San Diego.
Dr. Orosco strives to improve surgery and cancer care through his research. He has looked at outcomes, disparities, and practice trends using large databases. He is passionate about bringing technologies from the laboratory to the operating room, and has led clinical trials of fluorescence-guided surgery. He also has translational robotic surgery research dealing with robotic tool tracking, image perception, motion planning, autonomy, and remote telesurgery. He has published 90 manuscripts in a variety of journals including: Nature Genetics, Scientific Reports, JAMA Otolaryngology, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Oral Oncology, Cancers, Laryngoscope, Surgical Endoscopy, IEEE Robotics and Automation. Dr. Orosco has received career development funding through the UC San Diego Altman Clinical Translational Research Institute (ACTRI), and institutional and American Cancer Society research grants.
He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American Head & Neck Society, American Thyroid Association, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
