Biography

He received his B.S. degree in Psychology from Indiana University in 1988 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Human Development and Family Studies from Purdue University in 1994 and 1998, respectively. He subsequently completed an NIH/NIDA-funded postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Miami’s Center for Treatment Research on Adolescent Drug Abuse. he is currently a Research Professor in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at the University of New Mexico Department of Pediatrics. His research focuses on adolescent behavioral health and substance use, family-based interventions, implementation of evidence-based practices, health services research, and quantitative research methods.

Personal Statement

His research is motivated by a longstanding interest in improving the health and well-being of adolescents and families, particularly by increasing the reach and effectiveness of evidence-based behavioral health services. Over the course of his career, he have focused on adolescent substance use and behavioral health, family-based interventions, screening and brief intervention in pediatric and school-based health settings, and improving engagement and access to treatment. He is especially interested in applying rigorous quantitative methods to questions with direct implications for clinical practice, health services, and public health. More recently, his work has expanded to include population-level research on adolescent opioid use disorder and disparities in access to treatment. He also value interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and teaching, and he enjoy helping investigators translate important clinical and public health questions into rigorous, feasible research that can ultimately improve care for children, adolescents, and families.

Areas of Specialty

His areas of specialization include adolescent behavioral health and substance use, screening and brief intervention (SBIRT), family-based interventions, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practices, health services research, and treatment engagement and retention. He also specialize in quantitative research methods and statistical analysis, including methods for clinical and behavioral research and population-level estimation of adolescent substance use disorders and treatment needs.
