Biography
Dr. Paul is a Professor of Neurology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. in neuroscience from Jadavpur University in Calcutta, India. He then carried out his post-doctoral research in molecular neuroscience from Yale University School of Medicine, CT. He joined the University of New Mexico as a faculty member in 2005. He has an active research program funded by the National Institute of Health. His research interest is in neurological disorders of aging with a focus on cerebral stroke and dementia. Dr. Paul is particularly interested in understanding the role of neuroinflammation in the progression of brain injury. The goal is to utilize this information for the identification and development of novel therapeutic agents for neuroprotection. His research has established the neuroprotective role of a brain-specific tyrosine phosphatase, Ptpn5 (also known as STEP) and he currently holds multiple patents on a STEP-derived peptide mimetic for the treatment of ischemic stroke. In addition to his research work, Dr. Paul is also the Director of the Preclinical Imaging Core at UNM Health Sciences Center.
