Biography

David E. Pitcher, MD, is the Executive Physician for the UNM Health System. He oversees the Health System efforts to improve performance and meet the challenges posed by healthcare reform. He serves as a “key” physician leader in the development, implementation, and ongoing oversight of the Health System clinical operations to achieve the overall goals of system integration; improved clinical care; improved operational and financial performance; and health reform preparedness and transformation. Dr. Pitcher has broad experience in medical administration and proven success as a physician leader.

Dr. Pitcher was appointed Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs in 2002. He was appointed Executive Medical Director in 2006. He became a full Professor of Surgery in 2011, the same year he was appointed UNM’s Chief Medical Officer. In 2016, he was appointed Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.

Dr. Pitcher is a specialist in minimally invasive surgery and a long time faculty member in the UNM School of Medicine. He serves in a variety of administrative capacities in the UNM Health Sciences Center, of which the Health System is the clinical arm. He has served as the Chief Medical Officer for UNMH.
