Biography
Russell received a B.A. in Biology (scl, 1971) from Harvard College and an M.D. (1975) from Harvard Medical School. He completed residency training in Surgery at Hartford Hospital/University of CT in 1980. He was on faculty at the University of CT School of Medicine from 1980 through 2003, coming to UNM in January, 2004 as Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. He served as UNM Chair of Surgery from July, 2006 through December, 2020. He is now the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Surgery.
Personal Statement
My career focus has been on undergraduate and graduate medical education, specifically in Surgery. National educational leadership positions have included Chair of the Group on Resident Affairs, AAMC, and membership on the Institutional Review Committee of the ACGME. As a practicing general surgeon, my focus has been on breast disease, acute care surgery and hernia repair/abdominal wall reconstruction. I am proud to have served since 2015 as a UNM Learning Communities faculty mentor (Spring House).
