Personal Statement
Dr. Schade has been involved in clinical research since graduating from medical school. His principal goal has always been to improve the health of the United States population, irrespective of race, income status, etc. His initial studies focused on lipid metabolism and the effects of glucagon on free fatty acids and ketones. This area transitioned into diabetic ketoacidosis and diabetes. IHe has received continuous funding to support his research from the NIH as well as the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Association. Since the number one cause of death in diabetes is cardiovascular disease, his more recent focus has been on preventing heart disease in both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. He has been involved with several planning and design of clinical studies including the current GRADE randomized trial, the Efficacy of Glipizide XL in Diabetes, and the role of antioxidant vitamins in reducing cardiovascular risk factors. He staffs a weekly cardiovascular risk factor prevention clinic in which patients with and without diabetes attend. He also passed the boards in Lipidology and applies this knowledge to the prevention of cardiovascular disease. He was instrumental in setting up the coronary artery calcium (CAC) scanning at both University Hospital and at the Albuquerque VA hospital. He has published multiple peer reviewed papers on various aspects of prevention of cardiovascular disease in the last five years. He has also written a book on prevention of heart disease and has provided this book at no charge to all patients. He works closely with both cardiologists and radiologists at my institution to provide preventive care to many underserved areas in New Mexico.
