Personal Statement

Research: I have participated I recruitment and data collection for departmental research studies throughout my career at UNM. My primary research involvement has been with midwifery-led projects that have multi-year commitments. The INTACT study, a RCT with NIH funding, examined hand techniques for birth attendants and related genital tract trauma. The APPLE (Alterations in the Pelvic floor during Pregnancy, Labor and the Ensuing years) study followed INTACT study participants for up to one year postpartum and involved extensive data collection during birth and with POP-Q exams during pregnancy and postpartum.
From 1999-the present I have recruited patients for the following additional OB/GYN studies: GRAPE, LACTO-ROD, EPP-IUD, PPEPPI, APPLE, NOVEL, ENRICH I, ENRICH II

Teaching and Education: I have provided intensive one on one clinical teaching to student nurse-midwives (SNMs) in both inpatient and outpatient settings for 22 years. This requires an extensive time commitment and dedication to fostering student learning, growth and development over the course of a semester. As an expert preceptor, I have provided additional support and clinical teaching to SNMs struggling with a variety of learning challenges at outside clinical sites. I have provided clinical teaching to OB/GYN and Family and Community Medicine first year residents in the OB Triage, Labor and Delivery and postpartum settings. I have also worked with nurse practitioner and medical students as well as Emergency Medicine first year residents intermittently.

As the Education Coordinator for the Midwifery Division I have dedicated myself to supporting all of our learners as well as my colleagues as clinical teachers. In this role I have coordinated all aspects of the Midwifery Division’s work with learners from scheduling and learner orientation to mediation and mentoring. Collaborating with the residency director, I developed and implemented a plan and system for all OB/GYN first year residents to have a midwiferyElizabeth Tarrant, C.N.M., M.S.N.Page 5 of 5rotation. I am one of three mentors for the fisrt year OB/GYN resident classes. I provide preceptor education, support and mentoring for my midwifery colleagues.

Service: Providing care to women is my life’s work. It is an honor to care for women and families. Currently, I am only providing care in the clinic and postpartum inpatient settings because of lingering side effects of chemotherapy. Otherwise in my career at UNM I have provided full scope midwifery care and it is my hope and intention to return to this soon.

Generally, I provide well women gynecology care from adolescence through the post- menopausal years. I have cared for women and families through pregnancy providing both traditional prenatal care and group prenatal care with Centering Pregnancy as well as outpatient postpartum care. Inpatient, I have provided care in OB Triage, Labor and Delivery and postpartum.
