Biography

Betsy J. Taylor, MD, FACOG is an Associate Professor in the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology, summa cum laude with honors, from Oklahoma Baptist University before completing her medical degree at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Dr. Taylor went on to complete her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where she also served as Administrative Chief Resident.
Dr. Taylor is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has held leadership roles as Chief of the Division of General OB-GYN at UNM and as Medical Director of the UNM Women’s Health Clinic. In addition to her clinical work, she has contributed extensively to medical education, serving on numerous committees, coordinating journal clubs and surgical education programs, and mentoring students and residents.
Her commitment to teaching has been recognized with multiple honors, including the CREOG National Faculty Excellence Award, APGO Excellence in Teaching Award, and several Outstanding Contributions to Medical Student Education awards from UNM. She is also an invited lecturer and presenter on topics such as gynecologic surgery, postpartum depression, and women’s health care.
Dr. Taylor is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and an active member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics. She continues to combine her passions for patient care, surgical innovation, and advancing the education of future physicians.

Personal Statement

My career in obstetrics and gynecology has been shaped by a deep commitment to serving underserved populations, advancing education, and improving the health of women and families throughout New Mexico. I am devoted to providing compassionate, evidence-based care that promotes equity, access, and dignity for every patient.
Teaching remains one of the most rewarding aspects of my professional life. I strive to cultivate a learning environment that encourages curiosity, clinical excellence, empathy, and collaboration among residents and students.

Through mentorship, outreach, and interdisciplinary partnership, I aim to strengthen women’s health across our state and contribute to a more equitable healthcare system. Continuing my work with the UNM Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology allows me to further this mission which is to educate, to serve, and to enhance the wellbeing of New Mexico’s women and their families.
