Cancer Statistics Overview

The New Mexico Tumor Registry offers a suite of products to support partners and community members with their cancer data needs. Here, we describe each of the available tools and products to help you identify which of these tools or products might best fit your needs.

A note on race/ethnicity: New Mexicans come from many different backgrounds. Further, the burden of cancer rates varies substantially among racial and ethnic groups. For this reason, we recommend that you always look at cancer rates by racial and ethnic groups.

Reports and Fact Sheets

• Annual reports on the burden of common cancers in New Mexico that provide estimated case counts, including at the county level; and race-specific cancer incidence and mortality information.
• These fact sheets provide a brief overview of the common cancers in New Mexico. 

New Mexico Cancer InFocus

• Description: Cancer InFocus provides an interactive map where one can examine county-level cancer incidence and mortality data alongside population demographics, social drivers of health, and behavioral risk factors. County Profiles can be generated for individual counties, consolidating all listed data items into a report.
• Who should use this resource? You should use this resource if you are interested in county level data, including cancer rates as well as factors that influence the occurrence of cancer and other chronic diseases.

CAMSA Small Area Maps

• Description: This tool, known as CAMSA (Cancer Analytics and Maps for Small Areas) is a collaboration between the New Mexico Tumor Registry and the University of Iowa. They use Bayesian statistics to provide estimates of cancer rates for small areas: at the census tract and county levels. These maps illustrate areas of the state where risk for developing or dying from certain cancers differs from the state average. They allow us to show estimated rates for areas with small populations that would otherwise have to be suppressed (i.e., the data not shown because the numbers are too small to provide reliable statistical estimates). Please note that this tool provides estimates of cancer rates at small areas; therefore, the rates that you see from this tool may differ from those presented in other available tools. More information on the methods used to generate these estimates is available in CAMSA.
• Who should use this resource? You should use this resource if you are interested in cancer risk at the census tract level, or if you’re interested in identifying locations in New Mexico where risk of certain cancers is higher.

Cancer Rates.Info

• Description: This tool, provided by the Kentucky Cancer Registry, provides information on county-level cancer rates using an interactive map and accompanying tables. Please note that this resource will be discontinued in the coming months.
• Who should use this resource? You should use this resource if you are interested in cancer incidence and mortality at the county level.
