Steve McLaughlin, MD, will assume the role of chief medical officer at The University of New Mexico Hospital, starting Jan. 1, 2023.
McLaughlin is currently chair of the UNM Department of Emergency Medicine, as well as the interim senior associate dean for Clinical Affairs in the UNM School of Medicine.

McLaughlin received his undergraduate degrees in biology and economics from the California Institute of Technology and then attended medical school at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at UNM and is currently attending graduate school at UNM’s Anderson School of Management.
Since joining the faculty in 1998, McLaughlin has been involved with the clinical, educational and academic missions of the UNMH Emergency Department.
His other roles at UNM have included assistant dean for Simulation and associate dean for Continuing Medical Education. In 2012, McLaughlin became chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and in 2018, was awarded tenure as a full professor at the University of New Mexico. Additionally, he has been recognized as a Regents’ Professor.
Originally from Seattle, McLaughlin moved to New Mexico for his residency in 1995. He has strong family ties to New Mexico. His great-grandparents raised their family in Santa Fe and his grandmother and grandfather both attended New Mexico State University.
He is married, with three grown children. His wife, Wendy, is a kindergarten teacher with Albuquerque Public Schools. They enjoy spending time outdoors, travel, family and cooking together.
