Program Provides Research Opportunities for Undergraduate Students

UNM College of Nursing Launching an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Option
For many, the draw to nursing as a profession is strong. They know they want to be a nurse from a young age. For others, the calling comes later in life.
The University of New Mexico College of Nursing is introducing a new, accelerated pathway to pursue a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree. Designed for individuals who already have a bachelor's degree in another field, the Accelerated 2nd Degree option allows students to earn their BSN within 16 months.
“We are acknowledging the success of their previous degree,” says Kristen Ostrem-Niemcewicz, DNP, RN, CNM, FNP-BC, interim assistant dean of undergraduate education and executive director of undergraduate programs at the College of Nursing.
These students already have what it at takes to be successful in higher education and they have credits that can springboard them towards their nursing degree. With a deficit of approximately 6,500 nurses in the state, this new program will assist in closing that gap.

Students will learn in a cohort with their peers. Building on their previous experience, the program allows students to save time and money while ensuring they are well prepared to transition into the rewarding profession of nursing.
According to the New Mexico Health Care Workforce Committee 2022 Annual Report, of all the occupations in the health care practitioners and technical occupational group, registered nurses are anticipated to grow the most, increasing by 2,080 jobs.
Applicants with a bachelor’s degree can apply starting Dec. 15 for a Fall 2023 start. Required credits vary, with a minimum of 59 credits depending on prerequisite evaluation at the time of application.
