Mindy Tinkle to Assume Leadership Role in UNM College of Nursing

When all facets of women’s health, undergraduate nursing education and obstetrics are your great passions, you make for a great candidate for assistant dean of Undergraduate Education in The University of New Mexico College of Nursing

Mindy Tinkle, PhD, RNC, WHNP-BC, FAAN, who recently assumed that position, has clear objectives and excitement for the role.

“It’s wonderful and rewarding to be a part of a team led by a dedicated dean and experts who care passionately about the health of New Mexico,” Tinkle says. “It is inspiring.”

Twenty-five years in nursing education filled with honors – like serving as president of the International Society of Nurses in Genetics in 2014 – numerous publications and a healthy record of funded research on several facets of women’s health has led Tinkle to this opportunity.

Mindy Tinkle, PhD

One of her main objectives as assistant dean of Undergraduate Education is to foster impactful classroom and clinical experiences for undergraduates – the students she loves to work with.

“Watching that lightbulb go off for undergrads as they start to learn new skills and knowledge is wonderful,” Tinkle says. “You can see them think, ‘Wow, I am actually becoming a nurse!’”

During her own undergraduate years, her love for working with women and families was born. From special preparation in clinical genetics, to national certification as a women’s health nurse practitioner, Tinkle has dedicated her career to improving the health and happiness of women and their families.

“Since I started nursing school I have never wanted to do anything else,” she says.  “I found women’s health and never looked back.”

The College’s bachelor of science in Nursing is ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 6 in the Mountain West region. Tinkle is joining a community-based program that aims to improve the lives of its students, faculty and patients.

Her passions parallel the goals of the College, foreshadowing that her appointment will reinforce the College’s mission: to advance the state of health in New Mexico and beyond.
