UNM Hospital Hosts Blanket Giveaway & Resource Fair for Community Groups

As temperatures start to drop in New Mexico, the unhoused in our community are at an increased risk of dying on the street. In fact, exposure is one of the leading causes of death among those who don’t have shelter. That’s why, for the fifth year in a row, The University of New Mexico Hospital’s Community Engagement Department is bringing together resources to help.

On October 15, 2024 UNM Hospital will be giving away blankets to community groups who support people experiencing homelessness in New Mexico.

Blanket Giveaway & Resource Fair

Tuesday, October 15

9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

933 Bradbury Drive SE (East parking lot)

The UNM Hospital Community Engagement department acquired 8,000 emergency blankets and is hosting the event with more than 40 other community partners. It’s an opportunity for the groups to share information and resources to help the homeless population throughout the state.

This event has doubled in attendance which, in a way, is a double-edged sword. That just means there is a need for these types of resources. It's exciting that we get to interface with additional partners that we've never met before but, at the same time, it just speaks to the ever-growing demands folks are facing out in the community.

This year UNM Hospital Behavioral Health Services will also be present to provide information for community groups about its programs and services. New Mexico Harm Reduction Collaborative will be there distributing Narcan (Naloxone), a rescue medication used to reverse opioid overdose. Other resource information at the event will cover Hepatitis C, patient financial services, and stroke treatment.

UNM Hospital Departments in attendance

- Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinical Services

- Crisis Triage Center

- Emergency Department Services

- Department of Community Based Services

- Addiction and Substance Abuse Program (ASAP)

- CareLink NM

- Stroke/Heart Failure

- Patient Financial Assistance

“UNM Hospital takes its responsibility to care for the community to heart. It is not something that should be overlooked,” said Acosta.

Ways to Help

There are plenty of ways the community can support the unhoused this winter. Acosta said those who have the means may donate to APS McKinney Vento or Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless. She encourages those in need of assistance to contact Albuquerque Community Safety
