UNM Hospital to Provide Free Flu Shots at Lobo Men’s Basketball Game

UNM Hospital will be offering free flu vaccines to Lobo Fans on December 18, 2024 at The Pit before the Men’s Lobo Basketball team takes on Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

Shots will be available an hour and a half before tip-off when doors open at 5:30pm and will be available to everyone 5 years of age and older. UNM Hospital staff will be on hand to administer the vaccine until half time. Lobo fans can find the UNM Hospital team around the main entrance of The Pit in the Northeast corner.

According to recent data from Tricore, a not-for-profit clinical laboratory, Influenza-A has been on the rise in New Mexico since the end of October.  In this time frame, the largest group of people testing positive for the flu are children ages 0-12.    The largest group of adults testing positive for the virus are ages 26-45. Historically, spikes in flu cases in New Mexico have occurred in mid-December, just before the holidays.

Getting the flu shot helps protect both you and those around you, especially as we enter the winter and holiday season. Vaccinating against the flu significantly reduces your chances of being hospitalized with the virus or becoming seriously ill.

Those interested in receiving a flu vaccine at the Lobo Basketball game do not need to make an appointment or RSVP.

UNM Hospital also plans to provide flu shots at a Lobo Women’s Basketball game in the near future. Details on a date will be announced in early 2025.
