We are deeply honored to be known as a 'High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care,' a testament to the exceptional dedication and expertise of our maternal care teams. This achievement reflects the compassion, dedication, and expertise of our maternal care teams, who go above and beyond to support mothers and families during such a special time in their lives. This recognition reinforces our mission to deliver outstanding health care to the community we proudly serve.
We are absolutely thrilled to have this recognition. It's the culmination of a tremendous amount of effort on the part of a very big team—a team that has been mostly led, I would say, by Brenna McGuire, MD; Trish Mondragon, MSN, RN, RNC; our midwifery leaders and family medicine leaders. They have really done an amazing job at focusing on patient-centered care, on quality and safety, and on delivering the very best experience for our patients who are pregnant and who are experiencing childbirth.
For McGuire, UNM Hospital’s medical director of Labor & Delivery, the honor underscores the hospital’s mission to serve all patients.
“For our department, the award is recognition of the continued high level of care that we provide and the amazing effort from our outpatient and inpatient teams to provide care regardless of ability to pay, regardless of immigration status, and regardless of race or ethnicity. We really strive to provide the best maternity care for all patients." said McGuire, who completed her medical training at UNM and joined as faculty at the UNM School of Medicine and a practicing physician at UNM Hospital four years ago.
UNM Hospital’s commitment to maternal health extends across the state. The hospital’s maternal-fetal medicine group works with high-risk patients, including many from rural areas and Tribal communities. The department also leads initiatives to expand access to care for underserved populations through clinics that serve undocumented and self-pay patients.
“Being part of this team and being surrounded by individuals who feel similarly and have a passion for making sure that when women come in to give birth, they experience not only high-quality care, but patient-centered care.” McGuire added. “We want people to feel like they are involved in their prenatal care and in their delivery process. We really care about the patients’ experience, so we not only provide safe, high-quality, evidence-based care, but we also make sure that the woman's or individual's wishes are honored.”
“UNM has always delivered compassionate, state-of-the-art, person-centered care ranging from high-risk care for the most complex pregnancies to our strong midwifery culture that holistically supports physiologic birth,” said Lisa Hofler, MD, MPH, MB, interim chair of the UNM School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. “Our faculty are excellent, and UNM’s outreach partnerships across the state are strong. I’m proud that our quality outcomes continue to improve and that UNM Hospital was also recently reaccredited as a Baby-Friendly Hospital. UNM always provides excellent maternity care; it is wonderful that U.S. News & World Report recognizes our high-performing teams!”
