Center for Life

The UNM Center for Life's mission is to provide customer-oriented, preventative services and medical care in a healing environment by integrating the highest standards of conventional and complementary medicine and nurturing the intrinsic healing in the whole person – body, mind and spirit.

Founded in 2007, the center emphasizes therapeutic relationships and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and complementary. The Center for Life provides clinical services, medical education, research and community services.

Our practice of using integrative medicine reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is evidence-based and uses all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.

Services Offered

Integrative Medicine

This is a healing-oriented practice that takes account of the whole person including all lifestyle aspects. This practice of medicine reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient. Integrative medicine is informed by evidence and makes use of all appropriate conventional and therapeutic approaches and healthcare disciplines to achieve optimal healing.

This is a method of balancing and building the body’s life forces, or Qi, which flows through particular pathways in the body called meridians. Traditional Chinese medicine views disease as the result of an imbalance or blockage of Qi flow. Thin, sterile, stainless steel needles are inserted into specific points along meridians in order to disperse the blockage and/or mobilize the body’s natural immune response.

Chiropractic Medicine

This treatment deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, joints and soft tissue.

Massage Therapy

This is often part of prescribed physical therapy and physical rehabilitation programs because it has proven to be beneficial for many chronic conditions. Patients request massage for many health conditions in order to relieve stress, to treat medical conditions and to promote general wellness. Massaging the soft tissues can increase blood and oxygen flow to the massaged areas to warm them and decrease pain.

Energy Medicine

Healing Touch uses gentle, light or near-body touch to clear, balance, energize and support the human energy system to facilitate and support healing for the whole person (mind, body and spirit).

Unique Offerings

We offer the opportunity to meet with other spiritual healers including curanderas and Native healers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during an Integrative Medicine Consultation?

These are our new patient visits and are an hour-long meeting with one of our physicians. These are for specific health problems that have already been identified. The appointments are holistic and include a detailed personal medical history including diet, stressors, emotions, exercise, sleep and more.

What does the doctor do during the consultation?

The physician does an assessment of both the medical condition and the patient’s overall life (social, emotional, etc.). Recommendations with a focus on health lifestyle habits are made for integrating complementary and conventional therapies in a way that is both safe and effective. We also give counseling on nutrition, physical activity and mind-body medicine. The provider will also recommend supplements and other therapies when appropriate, but will generally not prescribe medication or order diagnostic tests.

Will the doctor refer me to other services at the Center for Life?

Yes, they physician will often refer their new patients to other services such as acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, myofascial therapy (Trigger Point Injections), counseling and educational classes.
